In Vivo Engineering of Organs and Tissues
Tissue Engineering has sparked the imagination of many scientists and laymen alike. The promise of being able to get a replacement tissue on demand is rather tantalizing. But nature has many tricks up her sleeve. For decades biologists, materials scientists and engineers have being designing better systems to mimic the conditions experienced by cells in vivo in order to engineer tissue outside the body. But the organization of cells into complex tissues during development occurs under a strict orchestration of soluble and physical cues. Our laboratory has pioneered a radical approach called the In Vivo Bioreactor (IVB) to engineer de novo , functional tissues and organs, on demand. This autologous solution, represents a paradigm shift in regenerative medicine as it requires no cell transplantation or growth factor delivery. Thus far the IVB paradigm has been successfully implemented in the autologous engineering of bone and hyalin cartilage.
